Project Scope and Objectives

SoilCarbonMap is an innovative project aimed at promoting carbon farming through the development of an integrated system for monitoring, mapping and managing soil organic carbon in agricultural soils. It harnesses advanced technologies, including soil sensors, satellite data and artificial intelligence algorithms, to accurately estimate soil carbon stocks, improve soil health and reduce measurement costs.

The main objective of the project is to implement sustainable agricultural practices that increase carbon sequestration in soils, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance agricultural productivity. In parallel, it aims to develop a reliable carbon stock certification system that complies with international standards, thereby creating economic incentives for farmers.

Furthermore, the project establishes a unified platform for the management and analysis of soil data, designed to be user-friendly for agronomists and farmers, supporting informed decision-making and the long-term sustainable management of natural resources. In this way, SoilCarbonMap contributes to environmental protection, the development of the circular economy and efforts to address climate change.

Addressing the Challenge

The main objective of the project is:

To develop an integrated system for monitoring, mapping, managing and certifying organic carbon in agricultural soils, utilising sensors, satellite data and artificial intelligence, with the aim of promoting carbon farming, improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing economic incentives to farmers through the certification of carbon stocks.

In summary, the specific objectives of the project are:

  • Promoting carbon farming through sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Accurate monitoring and management of soil organic carbon using sensors, satellite data and artificial intelligence.
  • Establishing a unified soil data management platform, designed to be user-friendly for farmers and agronomists.
  • Developing a carbon stock certification system that complies with international standards.
  • Reducing measurement costs and increasing measurement reliability, thereby facilitating the adoption of carbon farming and supporting decision-making for sustainable soil management.
